At least two Israeli soldiers were hurt in scuffles with activists marching to the remains of a former West Bank settlement.
The activists reached Homesh Tuesday despite army roadblocks. The army had wavered on the question of authorizing the march, but ultimately decided that anyone attempting to reach the settlement would be breaking the law. Despite this, army sources said the Israel Defense Forces did not expect to fully stop the activists, who planned to spend Independence Day at Homesh.
Homesh was one of the settlements evacuated by Israel in the summer of 2005 as part of the disengagement plan. Recently some settler activists have made it a symbol of a struggle to return to those settlements, as well as the fight to block potential future West Bank withdrawals.
