Special atonement services tied to the Adolf Eichmann trial in Israel were conducted in Roman Catholic churches throughout West Germany yesterday. More than 21, 000, 000 German Catholics were asked by their bishops to attend these services and to pray for forgiveness “for the sins committed by members of our nation.”
According to the notification sent out by the Catholic bishops, in preparation for Sunday’s special services, “the prayers will be for the murdered Jews and for their persecutors.” The bishops also called on German Catholics “to carry out visible acts of atonement.”
