An attempt to emasculate the recently introduced public order bill prohibiting semi-military organizations was defeated in committee in the House of Commons today.
R. H. Turton, Conservative, proposed an amendment to the bill, which has passed its second reading, by which the clause prohibiting political uniforms would be deleted on the grounds that members of the organizations at which it is aimed are inoffensive and should not be branded criminals.
Home Secretary Sir John Simon insisted that the uniforms, such as those worn by Sir Oswald Mosley’s Blackshirts, were definitely provocative in certain areas such as the East End. The amendment was withdrawn.
