Prime Minister Attlee paid a flying visit to London today to participate in a meeting of the Cabinet, which was hurriedly summoned, reportedly to discuss the Palestine issue and the unfavorable reception by President Truman of the “federalization” plan. The members of the Cabinet are reported to have been stunned by the statement issued in Washington yesterday by the President.
It is considered probable in London, Reuters reports, that Truman will reject the plan, killing the scheme permanently. “Political observers in London regard the President’s reported position as the most severe blow yet struck at Britain’s present Palestine policy, seeing that Britain accepted the partition of the Holy Land as a basis for discussion on the condition that it would be accepted by the United States government,” Reuters said.
