In a move to rescue some of the Hungarian Jews deported from Budapest and other large cities to centers for “undesirable” elements, the Australian Government’s Department of Immigration at Canberra has suggested to the Chief Immigration Officer at London that he authorize the British passport officer in Budapest to issue letters to Hungarian Jews eligible for Australian immigration visas. Possession of such documents would permit the deported Jews to return to the capital.
The government action followed intervention with the authorities by Walter Brand, general secretary of the Australian Federation of Jewish Welfare Societies. The document would state that the bearer had obtained or was entitled to receive an Australian visa.
