The state of Israel may buy plenty of Australian wool at open auctions, but its desire for wheat, meats, cheese and butter from this country cannot be met so easily, it was officially announced.
The announcement was made in reply to a report that Harry Levine, Israeli Consul general to Australia, had forecast great developments in trade between Israel and Australia. Mr. Levine is reported to have said Israel was prepared to take more Australian goods, especially meat, cheese, butter, wheat and wool, but Canberra officials pointed out that under long-term contracts nearly all of Australia’s exportable surplus of butter, cheese and meat goes to Britain. Future wheat sales will be made under the international agreement, but at present Australia has none for sale, they added.
