A campaign to raise $250,000 to facilitate settlement of Jews in Australia was launched today at the first Australian Jewish conference on immigration. The sum of $75,000 has already been pledged, it was announced. The conference dis cussed several specific settlement projects and appealed to overseas organizations to help in financing them.
Meanwhile, the federal authorities at Brisbane posted warnings against immigrants seeking to enter with tourist visas. admission was refused to 27 Jews, who were supplied with funds and tourist visas, arriving on the s.s. Nieuw holland. the measure was declared not to constitute discrimination but necessary to regulate immigration. Jewish organizations are negotiating with the authorities for admission of the group.
The authorities also announced that they had warned steamship lines against selling tickets unless the proper landing permits were produced.
