There can be no question that Austria will follow Germany’s example in treatment of the Jews as a consequence of the recent negotiations of Dr. Guido Schmidt, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, with Nazi officials in Berlin, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency was reliably informed tonight.

Jewish circles had expressed fears in connection with Dr. Schmidt’s conversations with Chancellor Hitler and other German officials on extension of the Austro-German agreement.

It was pointed out that there was little likelihood that Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg would attempt to renounce Austria’s minority obligations to the League of Nations.

It was expected, however, that Jewish problems in social and cultural spheres would become more acute as a result of the cultural agreement between Austria and Germany which gives the Reich freedom to spread Nazi cultural ideals in Austria.
