A decree of the Vienna Lawyers’ Chamber today prohibited “Aryan” lawyers from representing Jews in criminal cases. This is particularly important in view of the recent mass arrests of Jews. It could not be determined whether intervention by “Aryan” lawyers for the arrested Jews is possible under the decree since in most cases the specific charges have not been made public.
Jews are expressly barred from a tax amnesty granted today by the Finance Ministry. The tax returns of “Aryans” for 1936 will not be reviewed.
The Payerbach resort near Vienna has banned Jews as guests.
The popular Cafe de l’ Europe, which was one of the first in Vienna to display signs, “Only Aryan Guests Wanted,” is suing Robert Stricker, publisher of suppressed Jewish newspaper, Neue Welt, for publishing an article prior to Anschluss asserting that the proprietors were anti-Semitic. The cafe, which is seeking $3,400 damages, alleges that the article resulted in loss of patronage. It is understood that notice of the action was served on Stricker in the Dachau concentration camp, and his wife, who lives in Vienna, is empowered to defend it.
