Reports outside Austria of discriminations against the Jews of the country do not correspond with facts, Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg declared here today in an interview with the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.
Commenting on his conversation with Neville Laski and Dr. Nahum Goldmann, Jewish leaders, on the position of the Jews in his country, the Chancellor said that Austria does not recognize two categories of citizens.
“There is equality for all,” he said, “according to their outward and inward attitude toward the state and society. Thus reports of discriminatory treatment current abroad are not true.
“It is true, however,” Chancellor Schuschnigg stated, “that the specific character of the Jewish question in Vienna is primarily due to the political conditions and to the post-war naturalization system, strengthened by the Jewish influx from Eastern Europe. As a consequence there has been a certain reaction, but the law protects all citizens equally if they are loyal.”
