Chancellor Julius Raab, opening the new Austrian Parliament today, proposed the complete annulment of anti-Nazi laws passed since the liberation in 1945. Chancellor Raab, whose People’s Party campaigned on the plank of restoring former Nazis to full rights, revealed his Cabinet’s support for the annulment plan.
At yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, it was revealed here, it was decided to restore to ex-Nazis “Aryanized” property which had been taken from them and returned to victims of the Nazis who originally owned it. This move is expected to set off a vast campaign by “Aryanizers,” who bought, seized or were given property owned by Jews and other victims, to recover through the courts the property which they held only during the Nazi regime.
Several times prior to the end of the four-power occupation of Austria, the Allied Control Council vetoed similar legislation designed to compensate the holders of “Aryanized” property. This law, linked with the general amnesty program is expected to go even further in the direction of improving-the lot of the ex-Nazis than had been proposed earlier.
