Austrian Vice-Chancellor Adolf Schaerf today received a delegation of the Vienna Jewish Community, headed by its president, Dr. David Schapira, and promised that the government would give consideration to the Jewish request for a state subsidy for the Community.
The Jewish representative urged the granting of a subsidy because the Community is not self-supporting and must depend on the Joint Distribution Committee for funds in order to continue its activity. Although he stressed that no other religious body receives a subsidy from the government, Schaerf promised to place the matter before the Cabinet He said that he is aware that the members of the Community are unable to pay the taxes with which communal activities were financed before the war.
