Die Neue Welt, which recently asked how the Jews were to live in Austria in face of the new restrictive trade law, published a number of letters from Jews on the effects of the measure on them.
The correspondents agree that thousands of Jewish shopkeepers, agents and small traders will be deprived of their livelihoods unless the government lets up.
One writer says:—
“We have often read recently that the Austrian government recognizes the equality of the rights of the Jews in Austria. Can this equality of rights protect us from economic ruin? What are we Jewish merchants to do? Where are our children to live?”
