A bill to allow Jews to reclaim paintings confiscated by the Nazis in Austria will be introduced in the Austrian Parliament, Austrian Finance Minister Wolfgang Schmitz, promised yesterday.
He made the pledge in response to a request from Simon Weisenthal, director of the Jewish Documentation Center in Vienna, Enactment of this measure will bar several hundred such paintings from becoming state property before their Jewish owners, some of whom now live in the United States, could claim them.
