The Organization of the Austrian Resistance Movement today protested to the Ministry of Justice against the light sentence meted out last week to Franz Novak, who had been sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment after a long trial for the mass murder of several hundred thousand Hungarian Jews.

Novak, who was Eichmann’s transport officer in Budapest during the war, was acquitted of the murder charges but convicted of “violence under aggravating circumstances,” and will be eligible to freedom in four years, since he had been in jail four years prior to his trial. The resistance movement also demanded of the Justice Ministry the extension of the statute of limitation for prosecution of war criminals beyond next May.
