Author Salman Rushdie emerged from seclusion to appear at a Berlin event marking the 65th anniversary of a Nazi book-burning of thousands of books. Rushdie called for greater protections for persecuted authors, who he said “burn much more easily than books.” Iranian religious leaders issued a death edict against Rushdie in 1989, saying his book, “The Satanic Verses,” was blasphemous.
