Unless the problem of the displaced Jews is settled by next winter, “it will settle itself under chaotic conditions which will make the end results unpredictable,” George Backer, president of the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, said today following his return from a four-month tour of Europe.
Describing the DP situation as “desperate,” Mr. Backer, addressing a reception in his honor tendered by Herbert Bayard Swopo, noted editor and chairman of the board of the Overseas News Agency, said that the present conditions in the DP camps “can not last and unless some solution is reached, there will be a wave of emigration from the camps.
“The only way an orderly solution of the problem can be reached,” he said, “is by some solution of the Palestine problem which, while not immediately taking all of the refugees, will permit an orderly and systematic scheduling of immigration that will leave those remaining in the camps with some hope for the immediate future. Without that, there will be a dissolution of the whole DP structure.”
