Leaders of the orthodox Jewish Community have granted a dispensation to Dr. Hermann Badt, former Ministerial Director of the ousted Prussian Government and member of the Federal Council, permitting him to appear on Yom Kippur before the Leipzig Tribunal to conduct the case of the Braun-Severing Ministry against Chancellor Franz von Papen for unconstitutional ouster.
Dr. Badt, an observing Jew, who has always observed the Sabbath and Jewish holydays, was placed in a difficult dilemma. While the Braun-Severing group insisted upon his presence in the court as the most qualified theoretician on home constitution, Dr. Badt’s religious beliefs called upon him to observe Yom Kippur the holiest day in the Jewish religious calendar.
Orthodox Jewish leaders agreed to grant him the dispensation on the ground that the matter calling for his presence in court is that of the highest public interest as well as in the interest of Jewish prestige.
