The Democratic Party pledged today not to use the facilities of any “club or meeting place where religious or racial discrimination is practiced” during its forthcoming national convention in Chicago. The pledge was made by John Bailey, chairman of the Democratic National Committee, in a letter to Dore Schary, chairman of the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith. The Bailey letter was in response to one from Mr. Schary which noted the discriminatory practices of some social clubs in Chicago.
The Democratic official said he was “confident that all of the facilities that will be used during the official proceedings of the convention do not practice discrimination.” A similar exchange of letters was made prior to the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach between the ADL and Ray C. Bliss, chairman of the Republican National Committee.
