Eric Strom, an eighth grader from Stamford, Conn., who will have his Bar Mitzvah in Cracow on Saturday, arrived in Poland yesterday.
He and a delegation of 12 persons accompanying him, including his family and Rabbi Emily Korzenick, spiritual leader of the Stamford Fellowship for Jewish Learning, were greeted by the Warsaw Jewish community upon their arrival in the country, it was reported today by the UJA-Federation Campaign of New York. The delegation is scheduled to go to Cracow tomorrow. Korzenick is a member of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Assembly which is affiliated with the Reconstructionist movement.
A Federation spokesman said that the Jewish community of Cracow will determine who officiates at Strom’s Bar Mitzvah, the first in Cracow in 35 years. The spokesman also said that the venue of the Bar Mitzvah has been changed from the Remu Synagogue to the Temple Synagogue to accommodate the anticipated increased attendance. The Temple Synagogue is used only on special occasions, not regularly throughout the year.
The Bar Mitzvah is the outgrowth of a visit to Cracow last April organized by the UJA-Federation Campaign of New York for leaders of the Federation of Jewish Philanthropies. The trip to Cracow is being financed privately by individuals, not by the Federation or the Campaign, a Federation spokesman said.
