Acting upon vigorous protests made by Jews, local authorities today removed the swastika flag of Germany from the cluster of flags of all nations hoisted upon the Johannesburg post office building in honor of the arrival of Prince George of England.

The German consul immediately lodged a protest with the South African government. It is thought likely that the incident may be referred to the cabinet.

The South African government, which is headed by Premier James B. Hertzog, consists of a coalition government in which General Jan Christian Smuts’ South African party is included. General Smuts is one of the most enthusiastic supporters of the Balfour Declaration.
