Baron James A. de Rothschild, elder son of Baron Edmond de Rothschild and an active member of a number of Jewish organizations in this country and abroad, died yesterday at the age of 78.
Regarded as a leading spokesman for the Jewish community Baron de Rothschild was liberal in his philanthropies and widespread in his Jewish activities. Among others, he was active for the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Economic Board for Palestine, Palestine Electric Corporation and the Jewish Colonization Association. He was particularly active in the JCA, where he held the post of president, and in promoting Jewish settlement in Israel.
