Behind the brief announcement from New York that Julius Shafer of this city was named a vice-president of the Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society. (HIAS) is the story of a twenty-two-year-old immigrant from Russia, who with his brother came to seek his fortune in the land of the free forty-four years ago. He found it, and has for years been utilizing it in assisting other newcomers to these shores.
Now sixty-six years old, Mr. Shafer holds daily consultations with persons seeking to trace lost relatives. When in 1917 a HIAS branch was established in Seattle to care for thousands of Russian Jewish emigres, Julius Shafer met every boat, and as head of the branch helped many families to make a start in the country of their adoption.
For years he has been active in local Jewish affairs, and is also favorably known in civic and financial circles.
