Only large-scale assistance from the Jews of the United States through the $100,000,000 United Jewish Appeal campaign will enable the remaining 35,000 Jews of Belgium to survive the winter months, Paul Philippson, vicechairman of the Belgian Association of Jewish Victims of the War, emphasized yesterday at LaGuardia Field prior to his departure by plane for his home in Brussels.
Before boarding his plane, Mr. Philippson stated that “the realization by the American Jewish community of the tremendous problems we are facing in Europe and of the desperate need for your all-out aid surpassed all my hopes.
“The destitute Jews of Europe are looking to America for their only chance of survival through the winter,” he continued. “The physical help given to them by the United Jewish Appeal agencies is reestablishing them both physically and mentally.”
Mr. Philippson emphasized that the displaced Jews in Belgium “are waiting patiently for emigration possibilities, which I am certain will be open in the near future.”
