A Commission for the National Monument to the Jewish Martyrs from Belgium, under the patronage of Queen Elizabeth and leading Belgian personalities, was organized here today to erect a memorial to the 25, 000 Jews deported from Nazi-occupied Belgium to their deaths in concentration camps.
The memorial will be built in April 1964, in the former “Jewish District” of Ander-lecht. The initiative for the idea was taken by the Union of Jewish Deportees in Belgium. Other patrons of the commission include Cardinal Suenens, the President of the Senate, the Minister of Education, the Israeli Ambassador and others.
A national campaign to collect funds for the memorial will be started this year. Nat Neujean, the Jewish sculptor commissioned for the memorial design, prepared nine models which are now on display at the Palais Des Breux Arts here.
