Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion was reported today to be planning to convene a special conference of leaders both of Israel and abroad to mobilize funds for the expansion of secondary education in Israel. The conference will be held in Jerusalem.
A special committee was established jointly by the Government and the Jewish Agency to tackle the lag in secondary education for the needy. Israel does not have a free high school education system.
The goal of the Prime Minister’s efforts, it was understood, will not be to start a new fund-raising campaign but rather to canvass contributions from a select group of donors. It was indicated that Education Minister Abba Eban, currently in the United States, is holding preliminary discussions with various personalities on the problem.
