Israel Premier David Ben Gurion, in a special message to South African Jewry, promised that Israel would not limit Jewish immigration into the country, N. Kirschner, South African Zionist leader, reported here today on his return from the economic conference on Israel in Jerusalem.
He quoted the Premier as declaring: “We will go to the point of breaking down under the load of taking in our people rather than break down under the strain of refusing them. In no circumstances will we limit Israel immigration.”
Mr. Kirschner stressed the extrems gravity of the Israel crisis and declared that the “Diaspora must make an unprecedented financial effort to save Israel from breaking down under the load resulting from the admission of 450,000 Jews in the last two years.”
Chief Rabbi Louis I. Rabinowitz, pledging the South African rabbinate’s utmost efforts to mobilize support for Israel, appealed to the Zionist federation here to avoid an election campaign for the forthcoming World Zionist Congress and to negotiate instead an agreement on composition of the South African delegation.
