Premier David Ben Gurion, addressing the annual meeting of the Manufacturers Association of Israel, declared today that the “mission entrusted to our generation can be implemented only through an existing dual economic system, namely the cooperative system parallel with the system of private initiative.”
The Israel Premier continued: “It is our duty to accept gladly these two types of economic structures, which are deserving of our country’s fullest co-operation.” He emphasized that control of both systems was imperative to solve the problems of immigration and absorption now facing the new state.
Other speakers included Labor Minister Golda Myerson and Finance Minster Eliezer Kaplan, who stressed the need for improved industrial products manufactured in the Jewish state. Dr. A. Barth, general manager of the Anglo-Palestine Bank, urged that living standards in Israel be lowered because it is “impossible to maintain the present high standard of living in view of rising austerity limitations.”
