Ben Gurion Says Israel is Endeavoring to Import Kosher Meat for All Who Want It

Premier David Ben Gurion announced today that the government is making every effort to import kosher meat for all persons who want it. He added that there are no differences of opinion on this issue among members of the Israeli Cabinet.

Ben Gurion’s statement was issued after Rabbi I.M. Levin, Minister of Religion, and Moshe Shapira, Minister of Immigration, criticized the government for permitting the importation of non-kosher meat by granting foreign exchange for this purpose.

The Israeli Premier announced that a four-member committee named yesterday has been instructed to bring before the next session of the Cabinet recommendations regarding the question of meat imports.

Voicing opposition to what he called a "Kultur Kampf," which he said has begun with the question of meat imports, Ben Gurion stressed that "there are still big tasks ahead of our generation — greater than any Kultur Kampf — and we must concentrate on those matters — on which we are all united: victory in the war and immigration of the Jewish people to Israel."
