Dr. Eduard Benes, Czechoslovakian Foreign Minister, today assured a Jewish delegation from the Carpatho-Russian city of Uzhorod that his government would not attempt to force Czechoslovakian nationalism on the Jews of that section.
“You are right in refusing to become an instrument for Czechoslovakian nationalism,” Dr. Benes told the delegation. “That has been my policy and the policy of President Masaryk and has not been changed since 1920.”
“I understand your aspirations and will assist you. Using you as an instrument for our nationalism would not be good for you or for us. We don’t want it. I shall study with interest the question of the Hebrew schools contained in your memorandum,” Dr. Benes declared adding, “I can assure you of my assistance.”
