Benjamin Peled, Israel’s Consul-General here, and former Consul in New York, died here suddenly of a heart attack yesterday. He was 53. His body was taken to the Embassy where members of the Jewish community, embassy staff and others paid their respects. Tomorrow, the remains will be flown to Israel for burial.
Born in Rumania, Mr. Peled came to Palestine in 1935 at the age of 23. First serving in the Haganah, he subsequently became an officer in the Israel Army during the War for Independence. After working for a time as a journalist, he joined the Israel Foreign Office and served in New York, Jerusalem and London.
