Berlin police stepped up security Monday around Jewish and Israeli sites in the city to coincide with the start of the trial against Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan in Turkey. The police are providing special protection to the property of all countries suspected of involvement in Ocalan’s extradition from Kenya last winter. In February, three Kurdish demonstrators were killed and 16 injured during an attack on the Israeli Embassy in Berlin. The demonstrators had been angered by news reports, denied by Israel, that the Jewish state was involved in Ocalan’s capture.
