Bernard F. Gimbel, the founder and major stock holder of the department store chain bearing his family’s name, died here today at the age of 81.
Born in Vincennes, Indiana, the well-known Jewish merchant was a graduate of the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania, and held honorary doctorates from New York University and the University of Pennsylvania.
In addition to operating department stores and specialty stores in cities throughout the country, Mr. Gimbel was active in community affairs. He was a recipient of the Brotherhood Award of the National Conference of Christians and Jews.
Funeral services for Mr. Gimbel will be held at Temple Emanuel here on Sunday. The interment will be private.
