A note of warning against undue optimism in seeing in the class between the von Papen moderate element and the Nazi radicals a signal of the impending fall of the Hitler regime is sounded in the Paris Tageblatt today by Dr. Georg Bernhard, noted European political observer and former editor of the influential Vossische Zeitung.
“It is not advisable to draw incautious conclusions from the von Papen clash,” Dr. Bernhard declares. “Things are not so far gone toward the crash of the Hitler regime. No other authority possesses the power to replace Hitler. There are only attempts to secure Hitler’s alignment on this or the other side, but the impression that the Hitler regime is successful and firm is equally false. The Nazis, economically, are most uncomfortable.”
