Hope for the cessation of the anti-Jewish excesses in Roumanian towns was felt by the Jewish population of Bessarabia and Bukowina, when it became known that a new high commissioner for these provinces was appointed, a despatch from Bucharest received here states.
At the recommendation of Prime Minister Averescu, the King appointed General Rishcanu as the high commissioner of Bessarabia and Bukowina. Rishcanu is known to be a friend of the Jews. In a communication addressed last year to the Union of Roumanian Jews in Bucharest, he expressed his condemnation of the student excesses.
The anti-Jewish excesses have had a bad effect on business conditions in Roumania. Minister Petrovici, during a visit in Jassy, received a delegation of Roumanian merchants, headed by the Christian Senator, Czerkes. The delegation complained to the Minister that due to the anti-Jewish excesses, business has suffered, because of the inability of the Jewish merchants to travel in the railway trains. The Minister promised to issue an ordinance providing that all trains be accompanied by special gendarmes to protect the passengers.
