Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin today blamed the Jewish Agency for the plight of the 4,500 Jewish refugees marooned on three British deportation ships in French waters.
Asked in Commons to take steps to avoid intensification of terrorism in Palestine by not allowing a repetition of the “Exodus 1947” incident, the British Foreign Secretary said: “The British Government, is pursuing a policy of ## endeavoring to settle the Palestine issue and has referred it to the United Nations. If all parties concerned would accept this fact, the appalling things which are happening as a result of the attempt to defy the United Nations as well as us, could be avoided,” he stated.
Colonial Secretary Arthur Creech-Jones, answering questions about the use of vital shipping for the deportation of Jewish immigrants from Palestine to Cyprus, said that seven ships with a gross tonnage of 26,000 are being used to transfer visaless Jewish immigrants, four of which are not suitable for commercial use. He added that he was unable to give any official information concerning the fate of the two British sergeants reported hanged by the Irgun.
