The relation between economic maladjustment and race hatred was described by Rabbi Israel Goldstein of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun yesterday afternoon at the ninth of a series of fourteen world peace meetings being conducted by the World Fellowship of Faiths at the Hotel New Yorker.
“Those who ascribe racial conflicts to the limitations of human nature,” declared Dr. Goldstein, “and do not seek the fundamental causes are either blinding themselves or blinding the public.
“In America the Negro problem of the yellow races and the problem of anti-Semitism are aggravated and rendered more acute by an economic system which is competitive and exploitative.
“The resurgence of anti-Semitism in this country coincides with the low curve of the economic cycle. In 1921 the Ku Klux Klan was at its zenith. Now the Silver Shirts are gaining prominence. The competition which the Jew offers in business and in the profesions is in no small measure responsible for anti-Jewish sentiment. If our economic status should get much worse, anti-Semitism may take formidable proportions.”
