The Knesset’s Constitution Committee approved a bill yesterday that will bar the extradition of Israeli citizens wanted for crimes abroad. Under the measure, such persons will be brought to trial in Israel. The bill differs from one sponsored by the Likud government which applied the extradition ban to crimes committed before the offender became an Israeli citizen. Attorney General Aharon Barak informed the committee that the government has since reversed its stand and favors the provisions of the new bill aimed at preventing Jewish criminals from immigrating to Israel to avoid extradition.
