The Legislative Council, Rumania’s highest legal authority, yesterday declared unconstitutional a bill for State expropriation of all rural properties belonging to “non-Rumanians” situated within 100 kilometers of the Hungarian frontier.
The bill, introduced in Parliament recently by anti-Semitic deputies, was submitted to the council for an advisory opinion. The verdict held it would violate Rumania’s treaty obligations as well as the constitution.
The proposed measure provided for the dispossessing of members of national minorities, including Jews and Hungarians, living in the border districts, and replacing them by “pure-blood Rumanians” in order to “ensure better defense of the country.”
