In an unprecedented demonstration of support for Israel, the most Reverend Bernard J. Shell, Roman Catholic Auxiliary Bishop of Chicago, held a meeting in his home yesterday on behalf of the State of Israel bond campaign. Forty-one Catholic, Protestant and Jewish leaders of the Chicago community participated in the meeting, which resulted in the sale of $516,000 in Israel bonds.
Bishop Shell, in welcoming his guests, stated: “Ten years is a very short time in which to manifest or to measure the character of a country. Yet in its brief span of existence, Israel has proved that strength derives more from spirit than from size. One of the youngest of the modern states, Israel has already taught the free world a valuable lesson, namely, that the security of freedom can rest only on the constancy of sacrifice.”
