B’NAI B’RITH EARLY THIS MONTH INITIATED EFFORTS TO AID SHANGHAI’S WAR-STRICKEN JEWISH COMMUNITY, THE J.T.A. WAS TOLD TODAY BY ALFRED M. COHEN, INTERNATIONAL PRESIDENT OF THE FRATERNAL ORDER, OVER THE TELEPHONE FROM CINCINNATI.
MR. COHEN’S STATEMENT WAS MADE IN CONNECTION WITH A MAIL STORY PUBLISHED IN THE J.T.A. NEWS OF NOV. 16, QUOTING THE MONTHLY ISRAEL’S MESSENGER AS CHARGING AMERICAN JEWRY WITH “APPARENT INDIFFERENCE” TO THE PLIGHT OF SHANGHAI’S JEWS.
(THE REPORT OF THE CHARGES, CONTAINED IN AN EDITORIAL IN THE SHANGHAI PERIODICAL, WAS RECEIVED BY AIRMAIL FROM SHANGHAI. THE EDITORIAL OBVIOUSLY WAS WRITTEN BEFORE B’NAI B’RITH’S INTEREST IN THE SHANGHAI SITUATION, STIMULATED BY A DISPATCH FROM SHANGHAI IN THE NEWS OF NOV. 2., WAS MADE KNOWN.)
MR. COHEN POINTED OUT THAT IN A CABLE TO THE B’NAI B’RITH SHANGHAI LODGE, SENT NOV. 5, HE HAD COMMUNICATED HIS ORGANIZATION’S DESIRE TO HELP IN ANY WAY WITHIN ITS POWER. HE SAID A DEFINITE ALLOCATION WOULD BE MADE IMMEDIATELY THE NEWLY ORGANIZED EMERGENCY COMMITTEE SET UP BY THE SHANGHAI JEWISH COMMUNITY, UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF JOSEPH HOLLZER (BROTHER OF THE LOS ANGELES JURIST) HAD MADE KNOWN TO HIM ITS EXACT NEEDS.
