B’nai B’rith has begun construction of its first federally subsidized apartment building for low-income senior citizens in California.
Los Angeles City Council President John Ferraro joined B’nai B’rith executives and members, officials from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Los Angeles Community Redevelopment Agency to break ground Oct. 24 for the North Hollywood building.
The B’nai B’rith Golden Years Senior Apartments, a 91-unit, non-denominational building, is scheduled for completion next year.
“The cadre of B’nai B’rith volunteers have been instrumental in making this program a reality,” said Mark Olshan, director of senior housing and services for B’nai B’rith.
Construction also began recently on a federally subsidized housing unit sponsored by B’nai B’rith in Evensham Township, N.J. Five applications for other B’nai B’rith apartment buildings are now pending with HUD.
B’nai B’rith, the largest national Jewish sponsor of federally subsidized housing for seniors, began the non-sectarian project in 1971. Apartments, serving more than 5,000 low-income seniors, have been built in 21 communities, including Wilkes-Barre, Pa.; Hot Springs, Ark.; and St. Louis.
