To encourage young American composers and to honor the memory of the late George Gershwin, a prize of $1,000 will be given to the American musician under 30 years of age who submits the best composition in the 1951 Gershwin Memorial Contest, it was announced here today by the B’nai B’rith. The prizewinning composition will be played by the New York Philharmonic Orchestra at one of its regular concerts in April.
Additional prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the Judges, according to Leonard H. Berger, president of Victory Lodge of B’nai B’rith, which is sponsoring the contest in cooperation with the B’nai B’rith. Hillel Foundations. There are no restrictions as to race or creed of contestants, and all manuscripts are submitted and judged anonymously, Each entry must be an original unpublished orchestral composition which does not exceed 15 minutes in length.
