Delegates from all parts of the United States and Canada will gather at the Willard Hotel here tomorrow to attend B’nai B’rith’s fourteenth quinquennial convention, review the last five years, and plan ways and means of solving many American and world Jewish problems. The convention will continue through through May 8.
Joseph W. Byrns, speaker of the House of Representatives, will be guest of honor and principal speaker at the convention banquet on Monday evening. Judge I. M. Golden, San Francisco, first vice-president of the order, will deliver an address at the banquet. Alfred M. Cohen, president, who will preside at all the convention sessions, will be toastmaster.
B’nai B’rith now functions in thirty countries throughout the world, but the only delegate from across the seas will be M. Gordon Liverman, president of the District Grand Lodge of Great Britain and Ireland, who will deliver an address on “B’nai B’rith in Europe” on Tuesday morning. The convention will be addressed the following day by Norman Bentwich, former Attorney General of Palestine.
REPORTS ON HILLEL
During the convention, reports will be given on the work of the B’nai B’rith Hillel Foundations, which now function in ten great universities from coast to coast as Jewish educational, religious, and social centers; the Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith; Aleph Zadik Aleph, the junior order for boys between 16 and 21; and hospitals and other philanthropies.
The tale of the order’s manifold activities in behalf of German Jewry during the last three years will be told in full. Other reports will deal with the order’s Americanization program, the Wider Scope, the Washington Bureau, the B’nai B’rith social service work at the Mayo Clinic, the B’nai B’rith Magazine, the B’nai B’rith Mexican Bureau which was dissolved two years ago after a decade of rehabilitation work among the Jews in Mexico, and the far-flung network of B’nai B’rith cultural, educational, social, religious, philanthropic, and emergency relief activities throughout four of the five continents in the world.
Delegates will register tomorrow and in the evening a reception will be held for them at the Willard Hotel. On the following morning Mr. Cohen will call the convention to order, and Dr. Abram Simon of Washington will deliver the invocation. The president’s report will occupy most of the first day’s sessions. Mr. Cohen was elected to the highest office in B’nai B’rith at the Atlantic City convention in 1925, and was re-elected at the Cincinnati convention five years ago.
On Sunday afternoon, a wreath will be laid on the tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Dr. I. M. Rubinow, secretary, will deliver his report on Monday evening.
