B’nai B’rith is launching a nation-wide campaign among its 1,000 men’s and women’s units to obtain Sefer Torahs (Scrolls of the Law) for use during Jewish religious services to be held in the non-sectarian chapels being built at more than 500 army posts and camps by the Federal government it was announced here by Henry Monsky, president of B’nai B’rith and chairman of its national defense committee.
Wherever necessary B’nai B’rith will purchase Sefer Torahs but an intensive effort will be made to have lodges and auxiliaries borrow from local synagogues extra Torahs, provided they are in perfect condition, for use in army chapels, Mr. Monsky said. Arrangements for this national B’nai B’rith project were cleared through the Jewish Welfare Board and its national religious chairman, Dr. David de Sola Pool, of New York City.
