A resolution of the board of governors of the Weizmann Institute of Science at Rehovot authorizing the Institute’s executive council to draw up a 1962-63 budget of not more than 10,000,000 Israeli pounds ($5,600,000) closed a two-day conference of the board here last night.
The authorization also provides for 1,000,000 additional pounds ($560,000) for additional 1961-62 obligations. A plan to fund the Institute’s outstanding obligations of about $3,000,000, which are due from overseas committees supporting the Institute, was approved by the board. The board also approved appointment of Professor Amos de Shalit as director of the Institute for a two-year period.
Among those participating in board discussions were Nobel Prize winners Professor Niels Bohr of Copenhagen, Prof. Ernst Chain and Sir Robert Robertson. Others among the 60 persons taking part in the proceedings were Isaac Wolfson, president of the British committee for the Institute, Abraham Feinberg of New York, Isadore Pollack of Quebec, president of the Canadian committee, and Richard Kronstein of Switzerland, chairman of the European committee for the Institute.
The conference dealt with four main topics affecting the Institute. These were the scientific program and its relation to teaching facilities, applied research, financial consolidation and administrative organization of the Institute.
