The opening session of the meeting of the board of governors of the Weizmann Institute here yesterday was highlighted by the Institute’s presentation of honorary fellowships to Columbia University scientist Professor David Rittenberg, to Marcus J.J. Sieff of London, and to Nobel laureate S.J. Agnon.

Professor Rittenberg was honored “in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the field of biochemistry, and for his vigorous and pioneering role in planning the Weizmann Institute and fostering its development.” The honorary fellowship to Mr. Sieff was given in recognition of “his significant share in advancing the role of science both in his country and in Israel.” Mr. Agnon, who received a moving tribute from those attending the ceremony, thanked the Institute leaders warmly.

Dewey D. Stone, Boston, chairman of the board, eulogized the late board member Dr. Robert Oppenheimer, who was commemorated by a minute’s silence. Meyer Weisgal, president, noted that despite the Institute’s primary dedication to science, it recognizes through its three awards, the contribution of three unusual men, “each of whom represents to us and the world at large a vital area of human endeavor.”
