The West German Government said yesterday, after another Cabinet meeting on the problem of West German scientists working on advanced weapons in Egypt, that it had done all it could on the matter and was still considering what steps could be taken to induce the West Germans to return to this country.
Critics of the Government handling of the issue asserted that a strong and formal declaration was needed, preferably before the Bundestag, the lower house of the Bonn Parliament, and assurance that the Government would not merely consider steps but also take them.
The West German Confederation of Trade Unions meanwhile called on the Government to take “appropriate steps” to end the activities of the scientists and technicians. The confederation asserted that West Germany, “above all countries, should avoid all actions which endanger peace or threaten the existence of the State of Israel.”
