A 42-year-old American, Harold N. Borger, went on trial in Federal court here yesterday as the first American citizen charged with spying in a West German court.
Borger said that because he was a Jew he did not agree with the idea of rearming West Germany, and that he was worried about the revival of anti-Semitism and militarism in West Germany. He said he had tried to get information for a man he believed to be an Israeli intelligence agent. Borger was charged with working for an East German intelligence agent since 1959. He was described as a former U.S. Air Force officer and an expert in chemical warfare.
