The Grand Cross of Merit of the West German Government has been awarded to Rev. Dr. German Maas, superintendent of the Protestant Church in this region.

The 76-year old Dean, a Zionist for many years since his attendance at an early Zionist congress at Basle, rescued many Jewish children from the Nazis. Since the end of the Hitler regime he has been trying to create an atmosphere in Germany of understanding of and sympathy for the Jewish people. Dr. Maas, who twice visited Israel since the war, is writing glowing accounts of his experiences on his last trip.
